Courses offered during Rice Summer Sessions award academic credit upon successful completion. (Students who audit a course do not receive any academic credit, but a notation is made on the official transcript.) The amount of credit awarded will vary by course, and students can find the number of credit hours each course carries in the Course Schedule.
Rice utilizes the semester credit hour. Each credit hour is equivalent to 2,100 minutes of combined instruction and student preparation time. During a 3-week session, a student can be expected to complete 700 minutes of combined instruction and student preparation time per week, per credit hour, and during a 5-week session, a student can be expected to complete 420 minutes of combined instruction and student preparation time per week, per credit hour.
Courses taken for degree credit at Rice are generally able to transfer to other institutions. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to check with their home institutions to verify credit transfer procedures and the applicability of the Rice course to their degree program. Your home institution may require additional materials, such as a syllabi or course description, in order to evaluate the course. These are available on the Course Schedule.
